Why does overproduction create other wastes?

Overproduction is called the "worst waste" because it multiplies all other wastes.

  • Extra parts require extra Transportation to move them
  • Extra parts become Inventory that takes space and ties up cash
  • Making extra parts requires extra Motion and Waiting
  • If specs change, over-produced parts may need rework (Defects) or become scrap
  • Over-processing often accompanies overproduction

Address overproduction first, and you reduce all other wastes automatically.
