Why does overproduction create other wastes?
Overproduction is called the "worst waste" because it multiplies all other wastes.
- Extra parts require extra Transportation to move them
- Extra parts become Inventory that takes space and ties up cash
- Making extra parts requires extra Motion and Waiting
- If specs change, over-produced parts may need rework (Defects) or become scrap
- Over-processing often accompanies overproduction
Address overproduction first, and you reduce all other wastes automatically.
