What SMED Measures

SMED reduces changeover downtime by separating internal work that must happen while stopped from external work that can happen while running.

Download the free SMED changeover template — list each changeover step as internal or external and it totals the stopped time, the reduction from moving steps off-line, and the annual hours and dollars saved. Opens in Excel and Google Sheets.

What is SMED?

SMED, or Single-Minute Exchange of Die, is a lean method for reducing changeover time. It separates internal setup work that requires stopped equipment from external setup work that can be prepared while the process is still running. Cutting changeover time is what lets you shrink batches toward one-piece flow — see why that pays off in the batch vs. flow guide.

Use this calculator to estimate the impact of a proposed setup reduction. If changeovers are limiting capacity, combine the result with the OEE Calculator and Process Capacity Sheet to quantify the broader throughput impact.
